Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, is one of the most well-researched forms of talk therapy available today. Developed by Dr. Aaron Beck in the 1960s, CBT has since become a leading treatment for anxiety, depression, and many other mental and emotional health concerns. Research shows that CBT works well for people across a wide range of backgrounds, education levels, and income levels, making it one of the most accessible and adaptable therapy models available.

What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

CBT is built on a simple but powerful idea: the way we think directly shapes how we feel and how we act. Beck’s cognitive model holds that dysfunctional thinking patterns lie at the root of most psychological struggles. In other words, it is not just what happens to us that determines our emotional response, it is how we interpret what happens.

This idea is often called the Cognitive Triad: our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected, and they shape how we see ourselves, other people, and the world around us. A CBT therapist helps clients notice these connections and use them to create lasting change.

How CBT Works: Automatic Thoughts, Schemas, and Core Beliefs

CBT addresses three layers of thinking that influence our emotional wellbeing.

Automatic Thoughts are the quick, split-second reactions we have to a stressful situation. They happen so fast that most people are not consciously aware of them, only the emotion that follows. A CBT therapist helps clients slow down and identify these automatic thoughts using tools like a thought record.

Schemas are the deeper mental templates we use to make sense of the world. Some schemas are healthy and help us build strong relationships and respond to challenges in a balanced way. Others, such as patterns tied to abandonment, mistrust, or unrelenting self-criticism, can become activated during periods of anxiety or depression and make it harder to cope.

Core Beliefs are the deepest layer, the core ideas we hold about ourselves, often formed in childhood and rarely spoken aloud. Negative core beliefs typically fall into two categories: feeling helpless (“I’m a failure”) or feeling unlovable (“I’m not good enough”). The good news is that these beliefs can be unlearned, and healthier, more balanced beliefs can take their place.

What to Expect from CBT Therapy at The Center for Growth

When you start CBT with a therapist at The Center for Growth, your first sessions focus on building rapport, understanding your history, and setting clear, realistic goals. Your therapist will often complete a genogram with you, which maps out your family history, relationships, and major life events to better understand the roots of your current challenges.

From there, you will learn practical tools such as thought records to track your moods and identify automatic negative thoughts. Over time, you and your therapist will start to notice recurring cognitive distortions, thinking patterns like all-or-nothing thinking, catastrophizing, or mind reading, that keep negative cycles going. As these patterns become clearer, you will work together to challenge them and build healthier, more balanced beliefs.

CBT Techniques Our Therapists Use

Every CBT plan is tailored to the individual, but common techniques include:

Thought records and mood tracking
Goal setting and homework between sessions
Behavioral experiments, including role-play
Progressive relaxation and guided imagery
Coping cards and exposure exercises
Journaling and activity monitoring
Thought-stopping and thought-substitution techniques

Your therapist will select the techniques that best match your specific concerns. For example, someone managing work-related stress may focus on behavior modification tied to their day-to-day roles and tasks, while someone managing panic symptoms may focus more on exposure-based tools.

Is CBT Right for You?

Progress in CBT is measured by your growing ability to recognize dysfunctional thinking and replace it with healthier, more adaptive beliefs. As new thought patterns take hold, many clients experience real, lasting relief from anxiety and depression.
