We are not trying to make you peaceful all the time.
We are not trying to eliminate thought.
We are not trying to teach you to tolerate situations that need to change.
We are not asking you to float above your life.
We want to help you come more fully into it.
Can you notice fear before fear starts making every decision?
Can you notice anger before it becomes an attack—or before you automatically swallow it?
Can you hear the critical voice without automatically giving it authority?
Can you recognize when your ego has become fused with being right, being chosen, being admired, being needed, or being in control?
Can you hold a role without believing the role is the whole of you?
Can you notice when your body is saying no?
Can you recognize a real yes?
Can you stay with pleasure for a few seconds longer?
Can you listen to someone without simultaneously preparing your defense?
Can you notice yourself disappearing in a relationship?
Can you experience one painful moment without turning it into a conclusion about your entire life?
Perhaps mindfulness eventually becomes something quieter than a technique.
A relationship with yourself.
A willingness to pay attention.
A little less urgency to fix every internal experience.
A little less attachment to one story about who you are.
A little more capacity to stay.
And perhaps, over time:
a greater ability to be here for your own life while it is happening.
Take one moment before you leave this page.
Feel whatever is supporting your body.
Notice one sound.
One breath.
One sensation.
Nothing special needs to happen.
You are here.
For now, that is enough.
