Virtual Reality (VR) Therapy | The Center for Growth

What is Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy?

The Center for Growth offers Virtual Reality (VR) therapy, an innovative approach that enhances traditional treatment for a range of mental health conditions. Backed by more than 20 years of psychological research, VR therapy can increase access to treatment for specific phobias while reducing the time and cost often associated with traditional therapy. Until recently, this technology was available only at medical centers and university research labs. Now, it’s available to clients right here at The Center for Growth.

Who Can Benefit from VR Therapy?

Anxiety disorders, ranging from specific phobias to generalized anxiety, affect roughly one in five people and are among the leading causes of missed work. Left untreated, these conditions can significantly affect quality of life and tend to worsen over time. VR therapy offers a safe, gradual way to face and work through the sources of anxiety, often with less discomfort than clients associate with traditional exposure therapy.

How VR Therapy Works

During a session, clients wear VR goggles along with fingertip biofeedback sensors connected to a specialized software program. Your therapist can then adjust the sights, sounds, and scenarios within the virtual environment in real time to safely recreate the situation you fear. Using biofeedback data along with your own verbal feedback, your therapist gradually increases or decreases the intensity of the simulated experience, guiding you through a structured desensitization process built to deliver lasting relief, often in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy alone.
